Battlements of my mind
by Donald Brennan
by Donald Brennan
Uninvited you enter into a zone that has no defence
your unbridled darkness like a wild mare
galloping amok through trenches of the mind
raking havoc as you go and leaving
a trail of despair in a cerebral vacuum.
~
Onward you trot to the place that once knew hope
determination now replaced by pitiful sighs conceding defeat
in a bubbling pool of pitch and soaking lethargy
a breathless resistance met with an enveloping darkness
where love once lived and creativity blossomed.
~
Foundations on which towers were built of stones of knowledge
and mortar of optimism and vision
become nothing but mere fencing for this raven steed
determined to conquer this once fine citadel
that took decades to build and just moments to surrender.
~
Your leaden weight heavy on life´s battlements that once carried
burdens and challenges with heartfelt expectations of
bright horizons which seem now more like lost sunsets and
eerie moonlight with its lurking shadows that are
set to take the last rays of soulful light.
~
Resignation and battle fatigue flutter like flags above the parapet
where once a fire burned so bright all could see
casting boulders of molten hope and dreams defending against any
quad of nostril flaring stallions with raging black eyes
daring to assail, hell bent on annihilation.
